TWAIN KEPT A ROLLIN'
Shania Up! Live in Chicago
(8 pm/ET, NBC)

After a three-and-a-half-year hiatus from the concert circuit, country singer Shania Twain takes to the stage for a full-length show done especially for NBC. Tapes were not available; however, I did get a change to chat with the songstress during a recent conference call about the challenges of performing for live and television audiences at the same time.

"In a sense [performing for the cameras] makes it more exciting because the audience also knows that they are on TV and I think that they get more animated and stuff," Twain told TV Guide Online. "It adds an edge to things."

The audience in question was a crowd of 50,000 Chicago residents who crowded Grant Park on July 27th to get a glimpse of the diva's big return to the stage. But in addition to the music, fans at home will get the bonus of watching her enjoy some of the Windy City's famed attractions.

With renditions of her crossover hits, "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" and "That Don't Impress Me Much" sure to be on the docket, the Canadian-born performer is sure to present a lively two-hours. "I choose to release up-tempo songs simply because when it comes to live performance I'd rather spend two hours energized," she says. "I like slowing the pace down every once and a while to catch my breath and just get my heart rate back to normal and get more personal. Otherwise, I do prefer to spend the night rocking and being in that energized spirit."

Twain will also be belting out tunes from her most recent CD, Up! — which was released in both country and pop versions in order to make all her fans happy — including her new single "Forever and for Always." And just in case you thought you'd skip tonight's show because you were planning on seeing the diva in person when she heads out on tour this fall, Twain herself promises lots of surprises in both venues. "This was just especially designed for the NBC special... and very different from what the tour is going to be," she insists. "I was just kind of anxious to do a summertime concert between now and the time the actual tour starts."

And since Twain herself was very geared "up" for the special, hopefully this big budget event will "impress" all her viewers. — Angel Cohn

Shania Twain Revs Up for Special
by Angel Cohn

Shania Twain capitalizes on her ongoing identity crisis in her new CD Up!, a double-disc set that features the same 19 songs done performed in both country and pop styles. However, fans shouldn't expect such double standards on tonight's NBC concert special Shania Up! Live in Chicago (8 pm ET).

"I have a large band, there are nine musicians, and in a sense we sort of do a mix," Twain tells TV Guide Online. "I have three fiddle players, so even though during one song we are [performing] more on the side of the [pop] version, we'll still have the fiddles playing the part that was played on the [country] version and vice versa.

"So, the live versions in a lot of cases are [unique]," continues the 37-year-old songstress. "It is kind of interesting. I sort of treat 'live' like it's own beast in a way. It's a completely separate entity."

And it's one Twain will embrace in a big way again beginning Sept. 25, when the singer kicks off her first world tour in more than three years in Hamilton, Ontario. If only her 2-year-old son, Eja, was as enthused about it. "He has an affinity more for 'Hey, Diddle, Diddle,'" she admits. "I've had to sing that repeatedly at bedtime. I think he is more drawn to that right now than he is to his mommy's music."
