At the City of Marco Island Tree Lighting Ceremony on Nov. 29, the festivities opened with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner and closed with Santa Baby. The accomplished voice of 11-year-old Jenna Canfield of Marco Island was responsible for both.
This very talented young lady just attended the Orange Blossom County New Country Music Awards held at the VFW Hall in Naples, and won first place in both the vocal and entertainment categories for her age group, 7- to 12-years-old.
What's next? The week of March 1 to 7, 2004 Jenna and her family are off to Dollywood, Dolly Parton's Smoky Mountain theme park near Pigeon Forge TN for the National New Country Music Finals.
"We were quite surprised at Jenna's win," said her mother Carrie Canfield. "There were more adults than children as contestants.
"Pigeon Forge is going to be something else: a week of country music during which Jenna will have to perform four songs to demonstrate both vocal and entertainment ability in costume. Both songs and costumes have to be age appropriate. This New Country Music Association is very strict about that."
Jenna has already chosen three of her songs: Landslide, Independence Day, and I Try to think about Elvis.
"This is a more upbeat form of Country Music both with subject matter and style, with more pop and contemporary sounds such as the music of Shania Twain or Faith Hill," said Canfield.
"It's going to be a long week. Jenna's singing turn will be chosen by lottery so we won't know until we get there when she will be performing. We're expected to be there from beginning to end. We really just got started with all of this so we're not sure what it will be like _ but we're all excited to go."
Jenna said, "I think it will be fun, wearing a little makeup and costumes."
At the state and local levels jeans and a simple shirt are appropriate, but for the national contest she has to wear Western costumes.
"My personal taste in music is pretty broad", Jenna said. "I like lots of music. I've been singing for four years."
However, Jenna has been on stage longer than that. She began her performing career with the Marco Players at the tender age of five.
"She wanted to go but she was so shy," her mother said, "it took her an entire season to say her name on stage!"
Shyness didn't last, apparently, and once Jenna got acting in her system she absorbed it thoroughly. Last summer she was part of Kidz Act at Naples' Sugden Theater, and had one of the leading roles in their musical, Shakespeare Comes to Calamity Creek.
Voice teacher and performer Tia Weatherington (Charles), who recognized Jenna's talent and took her under her professional wing has become her mentor.
While other kids her age are "hanging out," Jenna and mom are doing a lot of hanging out on the road between Marco Island and Naples, getting a lot of homework done in the car and eating a few meals there as well. Every day it seems she has some kind of practice: guitar, voice, dance or acting.
Mom Carrie said, "It's a good thing Jenna is our youngest child: I couldn't do this with smaller children at home."
Jenna's older sister lives and works in Naples, while dad helps out at home with her older brother when needed.
"I can't say enough about the children's programs Jenna attends at the Sugden," Canfield said. "They work with 400 children in the area. They have the most up-to-date, modern equipment available for the kids to use.
"Jenna's dance classes on Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 are choreographed like musical productions. She comes out of them tired but excited, they are such fun for her."
Does she have to be reminded to practice? "Sometimes," Jenna admits. But she is a straight A student in school and that is most important to her and her parents right now. She even finds time to spend with her friends and enjoys swimming, working with scrapbooks, and ice-skating. Recently, she had the unique opportunity to try that skill on New York's Rockefeller Center ice rink when she, her mom, and mentor Tia spent "girls" week in New York, hypnotized by the magic of five Broadway performances: the famous Rockettes, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Gypsy, Hair Spray, and Mamma Mia. Their seats for Mamma Mia took them right up beside the orchestra pit, where Jenna enjoyed a conversation with the music conductor, especially his parting "See you on stage!"
Jenna said she has gained a lot of confidence, improved her memory, and learned a lot by being involved with theater.
She is very proud to wear a tiny gold medallion the Greek masks of comedy and tragedy, given to her by Tia.
What are Jenna's personal ambitions? Acting in movies, singing on stage, and "I hope to be famous."
She certainly seems to have all the components working for her. Marco Island will be wishing her the traditional "Break a leg" for Pigeon Forge.
