Shania Twain stirs the crowd in Grant Park
By Robert K. Elder
Tribune staff reporter
Country pop star Shania Twain, on stage Sunday night for the first time in 3 1/2 years, began taping her NBC special in Grant Park's Hutchinson Field with a hit song, fireworks and a marriage proposal.
Three songs into her set, after singing "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" "Up!" and "Honey, I'm Home," the four-time Grammy winner introduced Chicagoan James Hundt, who proposed to girlfriend Anneliesa Hahn after a lengthy introduction. Hahn responded with a near-tackling hug, and then said, "Absolutely," when coaxed to speak by Twain.
Twain, bellybutton showing between a bright-yellow top and black pants, then kicked into the rest of her set, including "She's Not Just a Pretty Face" and "When You Kiss Me."
"Thank you so much, Chicago! I tell you what, it's been great to be here in the city of Sammy Sosa," Twain said, her comment receiving a mix of cheers and boos.
According to NBC officials, "just over 50,000" people attended the free concert, sponsored by the Chicago Tribune and WUSN-FM 99.5. In August 2001, British rockers Radiohead inaugurated the venue, usually used for softball games, with a paid concert for more than 25,000 people.
With double the crowd, the taping of "Shania Twain: Up! Live in Chicago" was a much more cramped affair. According to concert officials, 30,000 people had arrived by 2 p.m., with fans forming a line as early as 10 a.m.
Despite their best efforts, security guards couldn't always keep narrow walkways clear. Long lines snaking out from portable toilets blended into the crowd. Handicapped seating also filled up by 7:15 p.m., according to a security guard.
Wearing sparkly, mirror ball-style cowboy hats, Colleen Sesten of Elmhurst, 13, and her friends sat on a red-and-white fleece blanket, one in a sea of thousands.
Despite a 40-minute late start, officials were pleased with the event.
"Actually, it's gone very, very smoothly," Laura Foxgrover, director of park services for the Chicago Park District, said near the end of the show. "This has been a great crowd, and people have been pretty well-behaved. It was a great way to showcase the city in a TV special."
Friday, NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker said: "Concerts with big stars do really well. We've had Cher and the Dixie Chicks, and they did great, and we expect the same out of Shania."
"Shania Twain: Up! Live in Chicago," a two-hour special, is scheduled to air Aug. 19 on NBC.

Thousands of people participated in what was possibly the biggest television audience ever in the city when country pop star Shania Twain taped a prime-time special Sunday in downtown Chicago.
More than 50,000 attended the free show, which will air as a two-hour concert special on NBC Aug. 19. Twain -- who has not performed live in almost three years -- will use the show to hype her fall tour.
Twain is the second performer to turn a set of lakefront soccer fields into a major outdoor music venue. The first was the British art rock band Radiohead in 2001.
Twain's show kicked off just before sunset over Hutchinson Field, buttressed between Buckingham Fountain and the Field Museum. Three cranes with television cameras swept over the crowd while fireworks exploded high above.
The affable cheerleader persona Twain has long cultivated -- along with her showy nine-member band of multi-instrumentalists -- is tailored for television. As the night wore on, Twain tried different ways, with varying degrees of success, to make the magnitude of such a large event work for the small screen. Her reliance on audience participation was an attempt to humanize things, but it often backfired. A male suitor who proposed to his girlfriend onstage was hyperactive to an uncomfortable degree (as was watching the couple woodenly slow dance to "When You Kiss Me").
Another time, after "picking" crowd members to help her sing (a stage bit long due for retirement), Twain settled upon three little girls. Their perfectly timed cuteness suggested the entire interaction was staged.
But that's to be expected from an arena-sized show designed for the living room. Twain played the proper host, entering with a neon yellow top to guarantee she was the center of attention and later ratcheting up the glamour with subsequent costume changes.
Most of the set list came from her blockbuster breakthrough "Come On Over" (Mercury) and its follow-up, "Up!" (Mercury), released last winter. Every song was arranged for heavy delivery -- a trio of fiddlers ("Honey, I'm Home") a four-guitar line ("Up!") and a six-man string section ("Thank You Baby!") sold their respective songs in bulk.
Although most of her show was strong on power ballads and arena pop, she did return to her country roots with a slimmed-down version of "No One Needs To Know," a country shuffle from the mid-'90s. Twain may be the country star who has the least to do with country music, but she remains true to the music's populism and has a knack for making even a field of thousands feel like they're at a down-home get-together.

Who is "the Fan" who took those pictures of shania at the rehearsal!??? they are so close!!!!!!!!!!!!! i would have loved to be there!! but all i have seen are far away pictures at the rehearsal, these are so CLOSE!!!!!
I found them in the shania twain fanclub taken by a member called captainsteve19
do you know how the heck he got so close?????there not just close....he;s like inside the gate b/c there is no fence in the picture......so i don't think he just had a really good lens, it looks like hes on the inside too????
All I know is what he posted and here's what he posted
We'll the first ones are from Sat, the people that were there will remember this moment, this is where we run across the street after the late practice, I was one of the ones where security said sir you can't use professional type of camera's, so I put it away, but not before I snapped these!!!! ha.
Enjoy.
First one is the one where she will be right back, security kicked us out after that, it was kind've dangerous, there would've been a stampede in front of the traffic I think, its the only blurred one, I think it was me shaking from Excitement, dangit
and what he said about the concert shots
Here's the stupid disposables we had too bring in, never again, I'm getting a very good Digital, for situations like this.
To bad I could'nt have brought in my 300mm zoom, we'd be in awe right now!!!!! haha

I had to register tell the story behind Steve's pictures of Shania backstage.
About 20 of us fan club members were across the street from the backstage area of the stage... soo, when Shania came out, at first we were hesitant, but we walked to the curb and kinda looked over... I was the first one to slip under the gate, run across the street and start raising a fuss  ... everyone else followed and Steve started snapping away... the rest is history... were were about 10 feet away from Shania and Brent Barcus came out and took pics with us. If you look closely at one of those pics you will notice Mutt walking behind Shania- seeing him in the flesh was a highlight of that weekend...
And thats the REST of the story 8)
Thank You Karen Welcome! :D what an adventure you had
I love the photo with Mutt and of course all the ones of Shania!
